To Love a Tree

is to love the pinnacle of a place
for that boisterous biomass standing on the earth
is the most perfect form that can emerge
from the peculiar package of conditions
of hot and cold, dry and wet
full of nutrients or lacking
the tree has become everything it possibly can
to be what it is
on the very ground that it stands
so I cannot favor Redwood over Joshua Tree
or Alder over Aspen
they are all the laws of the universe
manifested in a growing body
that will only know one pinpoint place
and therefore become it
trees are only beautiful
because biology is beautiful
because the laws of life are beautiful
because form is how we connect to process.
