Blue Gum Bay

Urbanism is a plan –
these trees planted
by 19th century visionaries
with design and no abandon
I sit here
with back against blue gum
because this is nature
now, on campus –
Up in the hills these highrises
with peeling ribbon bark
and scented acorns
stick up out of the cityscape
like figments of someone’s
long-lost imagination
the reality of which is draining
water from a ground that once
was different –
those men who planted these
planned their urban vision too  –
both came to be,
majestically,
but not without friction
as my own back knows
rubbing against this extremely tall tree.
